CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: As people age, bone density may decline and the risk of osteoporosis can increase. A large recently published study has found that regular exercise may help maintain bone health. Researchers analysed several studies conducted on people aged 40 years and above.

According to the research, brisk walking or jogging may be useful in maintaining the mineral density of the hip and some major bones of the body. The analysis indicated clinically significant benefits from exercise equivalent to about 2 to 3 hours of brisk walking per week. However, the researchers described the certainty of the evidence as low to moderate.

According to experts, instead of depending on only one form of exercise, adding resistance training and balance exercises to the routine along with brisk walking may be beneficial for bones and muscles. Regular physical activity also helps slow bone loss and reduce the risk of falls and fractures.

People who already have osteoporosis, low bone density or any other physical condition should consult a doctor or physiotherapist before starting a new exercise routine. It is important to decide the intensity of exercise according to age and health condition.
