CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: How to Control Fatty Liver and Raised SGPT-GGTP Levels Through Diet

In fatty liver disease, excess fat begins to accumulate in the liver. In many cases, blood tests also show raised levels of liver enzymes such as SGPT (SGPT/ALT) and GGTP (GGTP/GGT). These signs may indicate pressure on the liver or possible damage, but the cause of the condition cannot be determined only on the basis of these tests. In such cases, improving diet, exercising regularly and seeking medical advice are important.

Give priority to green vegetables and whole grains. To help control fatty liver, it may be useful to include green leafy vegetables, pulses, fruits, whole grains and adequate protein in the diet. Oats, porridge, lentils, gram and nuts in limited quantities can be part of a balanced diet. It is also important to pay attention to portion size and avoid consuming more calories than required.

Avoid sweet drinks and fried foods. Reduce intake of sweet soft drinks, packaged juices, excess sugar, sweets, fried foods and meals high in fat. Avoiding alcohol is especially important for liver health. Do not take herbal products or liver-cleansing supplements without medical advice, as some products may harm the liver.

Pay attention to weight and exercise. If body weight is high, gradual weight loss may help reduce fat accumulated in the liver. Regular brisk walking and physical activity according to one’s capacity can be beneficial. Sudden and very rapid weight loss should be avoided.

Tests and medical advice are necessary. Apart from fatty liver, raised SGPT and GGTP levels may also be linked to alcohol use, certain medicines, infections or other problems. Therefore, it is advisable to undergo necessary blood tests and ultrasound on a doctor’s advice. If symptoms such as yellowing of the eyes, abdominal swelling, confusion or severe pain occur, seek medical help immediately.
