CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: What happens when you eat one garlic clove every day? Know the benefits and the right way to consume it
New Delhi. Garlic is a common food ingredient used in Indian kitchens, but because of its health-related properties, it has also found a place in traditional home remedies. Sulfur-containing compounds present in garlic, especially allicin, are known for their potential health benefits. Eating one garlic clove daily may offer limited benefits for heart health and cholesterol control for some people. However, its benefits depend on a person’s health, diet and the way it is consumed.
Potential benefits for heart health and cholesterol
According to some studies, garlic supplements may help slightly reduce total cholesterol and bad cholesterol (LDL) in people with high cholesterol. A modest reduction in blood pressure has also been observed in some people with high blood pressure. However, there is not enough evidence to show that eating one garlic clove as part of normal food will provide the same benefit to everyone.
The right way to eat garlic
Garlic can be consumed with food or according to individual tolerance. If you prefer to eat raw garlic, the clove can be crushed or chopped and kept for a few minutes before eating. This helps the process of allicin formation. Raw garlic may increase stomach burning, gas or acidity in some people, so eating it on an empty stomach is not necessary.
Who should be careful?
Garlic can cause problems such as bad breath, stomach pain, gas and nausea. People taking blood-thinning medicines and patients preparing for surgery should consult a doctor before taking garlic supplements in particular. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, medical advice is also necessary before taking garlic in quantities higher than normal food intake or using garlic supplements.
Is it necessary to eat garlic every day?
No. Garlic can be part of a balanced diet, but it is not a definite cure for any disease. It should not be used as a substitute for medicines for high blood pressure, diabetes or cholesterol. For better health, a balanced diet, regular physical activity and treatment as advised by a doctor are more important.
