CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Excessive light in a room or in the surrounding area at night may not be limited to affecting sleep alone; a link with heart health has also emerged. A study published in September 2026 found an association between higher exposure to night-time light and several cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure.

The study analysed data from more than 11,000 people. Researchers found that people with greater exposure to more than 3 lux of light at night showed some adverse changes related to the structure and functioning of the heart. In such people, the risk of heart failure was found to be 29 percent higher than in the group without night-time light exposure. According to the research, higher night-time light exposure was also linked to structural changes in the heart muscle, reduced functional capacity and changes in other parts of the heart. Researchers also found that reduced sleep could partly explain this association.

Earlier, a large study in the United Kingdom had also found that the highest level of night-time light was associated with a 56 percent higher risk of heart failure. However, according to experts, such studies cannot definitively establish that night-time light is a direct cause of heart diseases. Experts advise reducing unnecessary light in the room while sleeping and creating an environment with adequate darkness and regular sleep. Blocking strong outdoor light entering through windows with curtains may also be useful.
