CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid growing awareness about healthy eating and nutritious diets, sea buckthorn is currently in the spotlight. This small orange-coloured fruit is found mainly in Ladakh and Himalayan regions. In many places, it is also called “Leh berry”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also mentioned the qualities of this fruit. However, it would not be correct to consider it a cure for any disease or a miracle food.

Rich in vitamins and nutrients, sea buckthorn contains vitamin C along with vitamins A and E, carotenoids, polyphenols and other antioxidants. It may also contain fatty acids such as omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9. Its nutritional composition varies according to the fruit variety, the place where it is grown and the method of processing. Research has found that some varieties contain more vitamin C than oranges.

What are its possible benefits?

1. Immunity: Vitamin C helps support the normal functioning of the body’s immune system.

2. Skin care: Vitamin E, vitamin C and antioxidants contribute to normal skin health.

3. Heart health: Some fatty acids and bioactive elements present in it are subjects of research in the context of heart health. However, stronger human studies are needed to claim that its consumption prevents or treats heart diseases.

4. Balanced nutrition: It is used in the form of juice, fruit, tea and oil. In the right quantity, it can be made part of a balanced diet.

Things to keep in mind before consumption: Sea buckthorn juice can be sour, and products available in the market may also contain added sugar. Therefore, it is important to read the product label. If you take regular medicines, are pregnant or suffer from any illness, consult a doctor before starting regular use of supplements or oil.

Conclusion: Sea buckthorn is a nutrient-rich fruit, but for better health, a balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep are equally important.
