CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: If you feel tired and sleepy while working in the afternoon, a short nap can help refresh the body and mind. According to research, taking a brief daytime nap has been linked to improvements in alertness, attention and some cognitive abilities. Experts say a short nap of about 20 minutes in the afternoon can be a practical option. It makes it easier to wake up before sleep becomes fully deep and may reduce the risk of grogginess after waking, known as “sleep inertia”.

A recent study found that people experienced less fatigue and sleepiness after a short daytime nap. However, the effect can vary from person to person, and some people may feel more sluggish on waking after a very long nap. Setting an alarm while taking an afternoon nap can be useful. Sleeping late in the evening or for too long can affect night-time sleep. If a person consistently feels excessively sleepy during the day, remains tired despite adequate night sleep, or finds everyday work affected, an underlying sleep-related problem may be responsible and medical advice should be sought. Therefore, a short nap can be useful for brief rest during work, but it should not be considered a substitute for adequate and regular night sleep.
