CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body’s cells become less sensitive to insulin. This can increase blood sugar levels and, over time, raise the risk of prediabetes or type-2 diabetes. Insulin sensitivity can be improved by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise helps increase insulin sensitivity. According to expert guidelines, at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, such as brisk walking, can be useful. Muscle-strengthening exercises may also be done at least two days a week.
If a person is overweight, reducing body weight by 5 to 7 percent can also help improve blood sugar control and lower the risk of type-2 diabetes. It is useful to include non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, pulses, fruits and adequate protein in meals, while limiting sugary drinks and foods high in sugar. Attention to sleep and stress is also important. Most adults are advised to get around 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Adequate sleep, regular activity and stress management can help maintain better metabolic health. Insulin resistance should not be treated independently through home remedies alone. If blood sugar is elevated, there is a family history of diabetes, or weight and waist size are increasing, it is better to consult a doctor for tests and personalised advice.
