Oats are increasingly being used these days as an option for weight control and a healthy breakfast. Rich in fibre, oats are considered beneficial for heart health, digestion and blood sugar control. However, eating them in any manner simply because they are seen as healthy is not right. The full benefit of oats depends on what kind of oats you choose and how you prepare them.
According to nutrition experts, steel-cut and rolled oats are considered better options because they are relatively less processed. In comparison, some packets of flavoured and instant oats may contain added sugar, salt and other added substances. Therefore, while buying them, make sure to read the ingredients and nutritional information on the packet.
The soluble fibre beta-glucan found in oats may help keep the stomach full for longer and reduce cholesterol. Oats can be prepared with milk or unsweetened curd. Adding seasonal fruits, almonds, walnuts, flaxseed or chia seeds increases their nutritional value. Including vegetables while preparing savoury oats is also a good option.
However, suddenly eating oats in large quantities may cause gas, bloating or digestive discomfort in some people. Therefore, increase fibre intake gradually and drink enough water. Diabetes patients should maintain a balance between quantity and other foods. People with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity should choose only certified gluten-free oats. People with kidney disease or those following a special diet should include oats in their meals only on a doctor’s advice.
Experts believe oats are not a weight-loss remedy on their own. Their benefits can be better realised only with a balanced diet, the right quantity and regular physical activity.
