CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: Frequent gas formation in the stomach, burping and bloating can affect everyday life. Many people ignore it as ordinary indigestion, but wrong eating habits, mental stress and a poor lifestyle may also be responsible. Intestinal health, or gut health, is linked not only to digestion but also to the body’s metabolism and immune system.
According to Professor Dr S.K. Sarin, founding director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, eating in a hurry and talking too much during meals can increase the amount of air entering the stomach. This can lead to burping and bloating. Mental stress also affects the connection between the brain and the intestines, because of which some people feel more abdominal cramps, heaviness and gas.
Give priority to fresh home-cooked food. Dr Sarin advised eating fresh and balanced meals at home to keep gut health better. Including fruit in breakfast, taking unsweetened buttermilk if it suits the body, and giving space in meals to fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses can be useful. Consumption of fried food from outside and highly processed foods should be limited.
Exercise and eating habits are also important. Regular physical activity and exercise should be made part of the routine. Eat slowly and chew food properly. Avoid carbonated drinks, chewing gum and foods that personally increase gas. Drink enough water and adopt yoga or meditation to reduce stress. Dr Sarin also mentioned eating once a day, or “one meal a day,” but this is not suitable for everyone. People with diabetes, other illnesses or those taking regular medicines should consult a doctor before adopting such a diet pattern.
Medical examination is necessary in cases of persistent bloating, severe pain, diarrhoea, constipation or unexplained weight loss.
